Did you Get Your Hands in the Dirt for Earth Month?
Planting trees by making donations is a wonderful thing, but planting trees with your own two hands close to the community where you live is a personal memory that will last a lifetime. That’s exactly why we strived to make this Earth Month the biggest EVER by creating opportunities for as many people as possible to get outdoors and get your hands in the dirt.
We're happy to share that there were over 70 One Tree Planted events in 12 countries, 55 cities, and 24 states (in the US). Volunteer totals add up to about 4,500, and over 70 businesses were represented!
Many of the events involved planting trees, and some included planting other types of plants, doing tree care such as mulching and weeding, or supportive environmental activities such as trash cleanup. Most of the events had an awesome turnout and great weather, and we definitely commend the troopers who endured the wind and cold on event day. But hey, that’s nature for you!
Over 15,000 trees were planted by volunteers, along with 3,500 other types of plants, and 1,000+ existing trees got some TLC to continue growing healthy and strong. Oh, and over 3,000 pounds of trash were also removed from nature.
Here are some of our awesome volunteers in action, including Lt. Governor of New York Kathy Hochul who joined us in Queens and the Metropolitan State University of Denver Athletics Team who joined us in Colorado!
The majority of the events were in the US and Canada, and thanks to our partnership with Cities4Forests, we also had participation in the UK, Ecuador, Ghana, Macedonia, Australia, Turkey, Ireland, South Africa, and Brazil.
Business groups like Thrive Market, TTC, Noble Oak, Causebox, NIKIN, and many others came out to show how much they love nature.
Of course, there were plenty of kids and dogs, as any good tree planting day should have!
Another awesome highlight is that the Nature Conservancy of Colorado was with us on site at Fourmile Canyon to tag and monitor the trees being planted for long-term study of how our trees will fare after all the shovels are put away and the volunteers have gone home.
They tagged a lot of trees and documented a variety of conditions such as whether a tree guard was used or whether they were planted on a north or south facing slope. We'll have many more details to share about this, but below is a little snippet so you can hear directly from their team. Big thanks to Maya MacHamer of Fourmile Watershed Coalition who was instrumental in bringing all of these elements together!
Earth Month also included Arbor Day, which wouldn't be complete without a visit from The Tree in NYC who was looking for a little love.
Huge thanks to our many local partners who made all this possible. And of course to all the volunteers that came out to spend some time helping nature thrive.
Our North America events were sponsored by Our Planet by Netflix, an amazing new nature documentary that shows nature's beauty in HD. Here's a look into the multi-media launch day for the documentary in New York.
And now that the PG stories have come to a close, here's a little extra from our partners at Wyrmwood Gaming who came to a tree planting event in Boston 😂
